How to start your New Year Right - Stabilise these Before Weight Loss or Big Goals

I like to think of January as a re-grounding phase, not a transformation phase.

Especially while routines are still loose and the kids are home, the aim is not perfection — it’s support.

Don’t be discouraged by feeling like it’s not enough, the following areas to put gentle focus into this month are all baseline essential health areas that must be addressed… So by starting on the small things, we’re actually putting our big goals into action!

1. Regulate Your Nervous System

If your body is stuck in fight-or-flight, no plan will work long-term.

Start with:

  • Slowing meals down where possible (even one calm meal a day counts)

  • One deep breath before eating

  • Gentle walks instead of punishing workouts

  • Letting mornings be softer if nights are still unsettled

Calm bodies create energy. Pressured bodies conserve it.

2. Eat to Steady Blood Sugar (Not Restrict)

When days are unpredictable, fuel becomes even more important.

Focus on:

  • Eating something nourishing within 60–90 minutes of waking

  • Including protein at each main meal

  • Avoiding long gaps without food

  • Pairing carbohydrates with protein and fats

This can make a noticeable difference to energy, patience and cravings — especially when you’re juggling kids and responsibilities.

3. Support Sleep — Even If It’s Messy

Sleep doesn’t have to be perfect — it just needs to be supported.

Helpful foundations include:

  • Similar bedtimes most nights

  • Nourishing evening meals (not just “light” or skipped dinners)

  • Reducing stimulation late at night where possible

  • Magnesium-rich foods or gentle supplementation if appropriate

Sleep improves when the body feels safe, fed and settled.

4. Reduce the Load Before Adding More

January doesn’t need more goals — it needs fewer expectations.

Ask yourself:

  • What can I pause until routines return?

  • What doesn’t need fixing right now?

  • Where can I lower the bar without guilt?

Energy rebuilds when your system feels supported, not stretched.

When the routine days are back…. We can get stuck into some of those big goals!
